With a couple of years under its belt, the Miracle Mile outpost of Cafe Gratitude appears to be thriving. No longer strictly raw and vegan, the restaurant has broadened its menu to include a hot soup of the day along with cooked burritos and tacos. A veggie burger with caramelized onions is also in the works.

 

"Can I get you something to drink?" I asked the middle-aged man who acted as if he would rather be anywhere else than where he was.

"No, just water."

 

It was one of those days: a little rain, a late-afternoon lunch meeting and a whole lot of traffic. Ironically, thanks to my neurotic preplanning, I wound up with some time to kill.
